Gas Management for the Smart Grid
SF6 gas density monitoring has been a best practice in the T&D industry for more than 30 years to:
- Safeguard the operation of electrical switchgear
- Confirm the correct filling level of electrical switchgear
- Show the current density level in a tank
With the advent of the Smart Grid, however, gas management will become the state-of-the-art successor as a best practice for SF6-insulated switchgear. Increased need for information, forecast labor force reduction through retirements, and possible government-mandated emission reporting are key reasons that gas management adds value and is the future for SF6- insulated switchgear.
SF6 Gas Management is a proactive method of acquiring real-time information about the state of SF6 gas throughout a substation and grid. When this data is accumulated and analyzed at the substation or grid-level, strategic maintenance decisions can be made which save time, effort, and money. This includes information about density, emission rates, total gas emitted to-date, and days left of safe operation.
WIKA has provided SF6 Gas Density Monitoring instrumentation with more than 30 years experience in the T&D industry and an installed fleet of over 850,000 units. Each instrument is manufactured in a 5-ó process and made of Stainless Steel housing/wetted parts to ensure the longevity needed for switchgear applications.
