Doble Engineer to Present Circuit Breaker Timing Fundamentals
Jozef Levi, application engineer for circuit breaker testing and TDR test instruments will present "Timing and Motion Measurement of High Voltage Circuit Breakers" at the Finepoint Circuit Breaker Test and Maintenance Training Conference on Thursday, Oct. 8.
In this presentation, Levi will describe the benefits of using digital Circuit Breaker Test Systems to test circuit breaker dynamic performance, particularly breaker timing and motion. He will describe the importance of adequate preparation for all stages of circuit breaker testing, and present case studies for different circuit breaker designs.
No single test can completely assess the condition of a circuit breaker. There are three types of circuit breaker tests:
- Rated characteristics tests are performed in laboratories with high voltage and current sources to prove that a breaker satisfies a standard request. These tests are done once for a particular design.
- Factory or routine tests are done in the factory to prove that a breaker satisfies design specifications. These tests are non-destructive.
- Mechanical tests can be done in the factory and at the site where a circuit breaker will be in service. Only this test can be done with regular circuit breaker test instruments. The specifications provided by the circuit breaker manufacturer are used at the test site to evaluate test results.
Maintenance engineers must understand the basic concepts of circuit breaker operation and function to fully benefit from this presentation.
Levi received a diploma in electrical engineering from the Electro-technical Faculty of the University of Sarajevo in 1973. His employment experience includes the Energoinvest Electrical Institute, Sarajevo; Energomex, Mexico City; and E Manufacturing, Mentor, Ohio. In 1999, Levi joined Doble Engineering Co., Watertown, Massachusetts, where he is presently an application engineer for circuit breaker testing and TDR test instruments.
