Half-Day Session Shows How to Turn Oil Handling into Art
Have you ever processed transformer oil only to find that it test worse after filtering? Ever wondered what the difference is between oil dielectric test methods? Have you ever noticed changes in pump pitch while processing transformer oil?
If you can answer yes to any of these questions, attend the half-day “Oil Analysis and Processing" seminar at the 2009 Finepoint Circuit Breaker Test and Maintenance Training Conference. Velcon Filters and TJ/H2b will present the many aspects of testing and filtering insulating oil.
Quality Oil Testing
TJH2b has continuously been in R&D mode for more than 35 years. While results are still coming in, some findings have led to extensive diagnostic tests
(BOA: breaker oil analysis for example) that go well beyond the basics (DGA and oil quality). TJH2b has learned that an enormous amount of information resides in the particulate of samples. TJH2b's Dave Hanson will share information about that aspect of analysis and will address several industry hot topics related to the real mechanisms behind the corrosive sulfur issue.
Quality sampling of oil and SF6 gas requires that a standardized procedure
be followed by field service technicians. The old computer adage applies :
"garbage in, garbage out." So, how do you pull quality samples? How do you
read the test results? What do you do now? The philosophy, science and
techniques are all covered in Dave Hanson's presentation.
Hanson is an accomplished speaker and authority on matters related to condition based maintenance practices. In more than 30 years of service, Hanson has had stints as chemist, lab and business manager, delegate to both IEEE and CIGRE, and for the last eight years both CEO and president of TJH2b Analytical Services. Hanson’s portion of the seminar will focus on the latest science applicable to circuit breakers, on-load tap changers and transformer maintenance
Oil Analysis
Topics will include contaminants in transformer oil, filter cartridge construction, and filter system design. Participants will learn the importance of understanding differential pressure and vacuum gauge readings as well as other helpful oil handling components. By attending this session, substation maintenance professional will have a better understanding of what is involved in the art of filtering transformer oil.
Ben Taylor will be presenting for Velcon Filters and has worked for the company for more than 20 years as product development manager and is now senior marketing manager. He has absolutely no special degrees, but does hold patents on a number of gadgets relating to processing transformer oil.
The seminar is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 9.
