Hydro-Québec purchased the optical sensing system from NxtPhase Corp. valued at US$150,000. Trans-Energie, the transmission division of Hydro-Québec, will explore the benefits of optical technology and test the advantages of NxtPhase equipment over conventional systems. Expected to be operational in October 2001, the NXVCT sensors will be installed at a Rolls Royce gas-turbine generating station in Montréal. Hydro-Québec intends to install the sensors for comparison against conventional references as part of a rigorous evaluation to verify their performance for revenue metering and protection of the power system.
The sensors also fit into Hydro-Québec's general plan to increase the level of digitization in the substation, and engineers will be looking at the sensors' ability to provide digital information about operating conditions on the transmission network.
