Featured Poll: Gender in the Power Industry

Feb. 9, 2015
When I entered the power industry back in the 1970s, there was nary a female engineer to be found.

When I entered the power industry  back in the 1970s, there was nary a female engineer to be found. Oh sure, we had female typists and secretaries and even one draftswoman, but the engineers, chemists and technicians in the utility R&D department where I worked were almost all men. I heard of a couple of female lineworkers but never met them.

Of course, there were fewer women in those particular job pools also. At least there were certainly scant female students in the College of Engineering at the (to say the least) progressive University of California at Berkeley where I graduated.

Have we as an industry changed? Certainly. But enough? Tell us what you think.
