When vandals targeted a transmission line in Arkansas in August, the FBI offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for the downed high-tension line. The FBI described the likely culprit as “familiar with the Holland Bottoms area” and possessing “above-average knowledge or skill in electrical matters.”

According to Forbes, the attack was almost certainly calculated to cause power outages in the surrounding area. The damage, however, failed to cause a power outage, but William Pentland writes that we may not be so lucky next time.

The incident was initially described in media reports as something akin to thoughtless vandalism involving a severed transmission line... While many if not most people appreciate the consequences of losing electric power, far fewer people appreciate a far more worrisome scenario–how easily terrorists could bring down the power grid....(Forbes)
