FirstEnergy President and Chief Executive Officer Anthony J. Alexander announced during a speech to the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC) that the company will donate $50,000 to provide scholarships to deserving students attending member institutions.
Based in Columbus, Ohio, OFIC includes 34 member institutions representing nearly 100,000 students. For more than 60 years, the organization has been America's premier state foundation dedicated to supporting independent colleges and universities through educational programs, scholarships and collaborative efforts.
In his speech today before OFIC's Board of Trustees, Alexander recognized the organization's role in preparing students for challenging jobs in industries such as electricity generation and distribution.
"Supporting OFIC's educational mission is an investment in the future of FirstEnergy and the communities we serve because we'll continue to need the best and brightest graduates to meet the service requirements of our customers in the years ahead," Alexander said.
Since 1987, FirstEnergy companies have provided OFIC with more than $1 million in support, including the 2014 Annual Campaign donation of $30,000 from the FirstEnergy Foundation and $20,000 from FirstEnergy Solutions.
