Alstom T&D Wins Contract from BHP Billiton Iron Ore
Alstom's Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Sector has won a Euro 22 million contract from BHP Billiton Iron Ore to connect mining sites situated in the remote Pilbara region of Western Australia to an existing gas-fired power station in Newman.
Alstom T&D will supply two 132-kV transmission lines totaling 115 km (71 miles), and three turnkey substations to be located at BHP Billiton's new mining site at Junction (Mining Area C), BHP Billiton's existing mine at Yandi and the Duke power station at Newman.
Alstom T&D equipment will include 145-kV and 72.5-kV circuit breakers and disconnectors, 33-kV GIS switchgear, transformers, MiCOM protection relays, SCADA and e-terra software systems.
The project will be split into two parts, with the first transmission line between Yandi and Junction scheduled for completion by May 2004 and the second line, between Junction and the Newman power station, by November.
Frank Bosci, marketing director for Australia, said, “The award of this important contract is the culmination of a constructive collaboration with BHP Billiton and is based on Alstom T&D's experience and expertise in delivering complex systems in remote and harsh mining areas.”
