Canada: CEA Advocates Cross-Border Cooperation
The Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) recommends binational action to maintain an adequate and diverse electricity supply in North America. Closer cooperation and greater trade between Canada and the United States will promote reliability, economic development and environmental performance in both countries.
“Given the level of integration of Canadian and U.S. electricity systems, coordinated approaches must be considered,” states Hans Konow, CEA president and CEO. “The on-going dialogue around closer cooperation is in the interest of all stakeholders. By raising the level of awareness in both Ottawa and Washington, the Canadian electricity industry is pursuing common solutions to energy security for the North American electricity market.”
Future growth in electricity demand in Canada and the United States will require increases in capacity in both countries. Both sides of the border project increases in the order of 25% in generation capacity by 2025 to satisfy demand. CEA believes the more rational approach for meeting increased demand is to take advantage of the diversity of fuel sources and generation supply.
