Germany/Great Britain: Siemens Expands Energy Services Business
By expanding its Power Services Business Unit (PSBU), Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution (PTD, Erlangen, Germany) is widening the scope of its energy services business in Great Britain.
Siemens acquired the Installation Group from National Grid Co., Britain's largest power transmission corporation. Comprising 58 service experts, the Installation Group will form the core of PSBU. Its familiarity with National Grid's networks puts PTD ahead of the curve.
In the context of market liberalization, British power suppliers tend to increase outsourcing of non-core business activities to their major suppliers. The business strategy then proceeds in the direction of placing large-scale turnkey projects that include a range of services with these suppliers.
The non-expanded PSBU in the United Kingdom puts Siemens PTD in a position to take advantage of the growing market potential for service business in power networks in the transmission and distribution sector or in industry.
The PSBU's tasks involve the provision of more energy-related services, not only to make the handling of individual service orders easier, but also so that it is better equipped to construct turnkey energy installations that include a service portion.
PTD Service, the division of the Siemens PTD Group of which the PSBU is included, provides all the energy services involved along the power transmission and distribution value chain, including network maintenance, modernization and upgrading of power transmission and distribution systems, system management and network operation. Also featured are analysis and optimization of customer networks, devising and implementation of innovative energy concepts, training and customer support.
