Honolulu to Test Municipal Wi-Fi
Chinatown, a Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S., neighborhood, is establishing a public-private partnership with Internet service provider (ISP) EarthLink in a pilot program to provide free wireless broadband access throughout the neighborhood. The pilot program starts this summer and runs for one year.
EarthLink also will work with Hawaiian Electric Co. (HECO; Honolulu) to help the utility test next-generation utility applications and services that leverage the Wi-Fi network. The ISP will partner with HECO to provide connectivity to test a variety of utility applications, including advanced electric metering and energy-conservation initiatives.
