New Mexico Adds Wind Power
The eastern plains of New Mexico have abundant winds for the generation of electricity. The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) has identified more than 10,000 MW of potential wind energy conversion in the region.
New Mexico has seven operating wind projects totaling 406 MW. Aragonne Wind, LLC owns the newest wind energy conversion facility. The wind farm recently began construction approximately 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Santa Rosa, New Mexico. It will generate approximately 90 MW of power. The wind energy center will have 90 Mitsubishi 1-MW wind turbines, each 210 ft (64 m) tall. Aragonne Wind will interconnect with Public Service Company of New Mexico's (PNM) bulk transmission system.
