United States: GE Provides Consulting Services for Long Island
GE Power Systems (Atlanta, Georgia), on behalf of Long Island Power Authority (LIPA; Long Island, New York), analyzed the technical issues associated with interconnecting the Cross-Sound Cable Project.
As the first merchant transmission project in the United States, and the largest application of voltage-source converter technology to date, this effort required the application of advanced technical analyses to allow successful integration into LIPA's existing transmission grid.
This project consists of a 24-mile (39-km) HVDC transmission line that runs under Long Island Sound and interconnects the Long Island system at Shoreham, New York, and the New England system at New Haven, Connecticut.
LIPA retained GE Power Systems Energy Consulting to draft functional technical and system interface requirements for LIPA's solicitation for merchant transmission development proposals; evaluate technical proposals from prospective merchant developers; review technical design and performance studies performed by the developer's equipment vendor; and participate in commissioning.
