United States: MISO, PJM Form Single Energy Market
On Jan. 21, 2002, the PJM Interconnection and the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator Inc. (MISO) executed a letter of intent to develop a single wholesale market for electricity in 27 Midwest and mid-Atlantic states, as well as in the District of Columbia and the Canadian province of Manitoba.
This market through PJM and MISO's regions would span more than 1 million sq miles (1.6 million sq km) and will be administered by two separate organizations, though certain functions will be undertaken jointly. The joint effort should enhance the ability to meet the needs of states, districts and provinces. This announcement brings the industry one step closer to the creation of large regional transmission organizations as encouraged by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
