Prolec GE Expands Production Volume of Transformers
Prolec GE, a joint venture between GE Energy and electrical transformer supplier Xignux, is expanding its manufacturing capabilities in Monterrey, Mexico. The US$50 million expansion project is focused on two of Prolec GE's product lines, including power and commercial transformers, making it one of only a few North American manufacturers of the power transformer line.
The expansion will enable Prolec GE's power transformer line to include transformers up to 1000 MVA with voltages up to 550 kV, which is in response to the worldwide infrastructure capacity expansions, and in support of the growth of the electrical industry. The commercial transformer line is expected to increase its current production volume over 30% to support the growing demand of the wind-generation segment.
Shipments from the capacity additions are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2008 for commercial transformers and the second half of 2009 for power transformers.
