Barcelona Experiences Blackout
Barcelona, Spain, experienced a major power outage yesterday, with 350,000 customers affected. The outage began around 11 a.m. and affected traffic signals in much of the city center as well as several lines of the subway system, according to an Associated Press report.
Red Electrica, the company that manages Spain's power grid, said a cable had fallen down at one substation and shortly thereafter, two other substations lost all power, with a fire breaking out at one of them. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, according to the AP report.
Tens of thousands of Barcelona businesses and homes went a second day without electricity Tuesday, although Red Electrica said that more than half the power supply had been restored yesterday. The power company Fecsa-Endesa said 80,000 of its customers were still affected Tuesday morning, but 50,000 of them should have power restored by the end of the day.According to the AP, Red Electrica de Espana Director Luis Atienza told Cadena SER radio that major cities needed to increase their sources of electricity to cope with this kind of accident. He said maintenance investment had tripled in the past four years. However, city officials said utilities needed to invest adequately in maintenance.
