DOE: 3 Million Without Power Because of Ike

As of 6 a.m. EDT Sept. 17, there are an estimated 3,085,599 customers without power in the U.S. states most heavily impacted by Ike (see summary table above) plus an additional 3,864 customers without power in New York, Illinois, West Virginia, and Missouri. Largest outages remain in Texas where 1,915,556 customers are without power. Over 636,000 customers have had power restored since Situation Report No. 6.

  • Louisiana has 32,075 customers without power:
  • Entergy 16,057 customer outages
  • SWEPCO 1,439 customer outages
  • CLECO 489 customer outages
  • Cooperative utilities have a combined 14,090 customer outages

The remaining 7,271 outages are due to Gustav. Entergy has restored power to over 950,000 customers who lost power due to Gustav and Ike. Entergy reports that remaining Gustav damage to the transmission system includes 14 lines and 7 substations out of service.

As of 9 p.m. EDT Sept. 16, 1,915,556 customers are reported without power in Texas. This is reduction of about 160,000 customers from Situation Report No. 6.

As of 7 p.m. EDT Sept. 16, CenterPoint equipment outages include:

  • Distribution circuits - 936 or 63 percent
  • Transmission circuits – 21, or 6 percent
  • Power Transformers – 44, or 8 percent
  • Auto Transformers – 2, or 3 percent

Ike caused major power outages in Arkansas and parts of the Midwest, Ohio Valley and Northeast. Outages as of 8 a.m. EDT Sept. 17: -

  • Ohio - 795,100 outages, 14 percent of total customers
  • Kentucky – 240,900 outages, 11 percent of total customers
  • Indiana – 56,000 outages, 2 percent of total customers
  • Pennsylvania – 37,300, less than 1 percent of total customers
  • Arkansas – 8,668 outages, less than 1 percent of customers
  • New York – 2,500 outages, less than 1 percent of total customers
  • Missouri - 150 outages, less than 1 percent of total customers
  • Illinois - 14 outages, less than 1 percent of total customers
  • West Virginia – 1,200 outages, less than 1 percent of total customers
