Irene Leaves 920,000 FirstEnergy Customers Without Power

More than 770,000 FirstEnergy customers in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland have been restored after losing power due to Hurricane Irene. Overall, 920,000 customers were affected by the storm.

Crews continue working to restore service to the approximately 150,000 customers who remain without power.

The current FirstEnergy outage totals by utility include:

  • Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) – The majority of the remaining 130,000 customers should be restored by the weekend, with full restoration by early next week.
  • Metropolitan Edison (Met-Ed) – The majority of the remaining 21,000 customers should be restored by midnight Friday.
  • Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec) –All of the remaining 2,000 customers should be restored by midnight Wednesday.

Many of the areas that remain without power experienced severe flooding as a result of the storm, which has limited crew accessibility and has hampered the damage assessment and restoration process.
