Major Power Failure Hits Pune, India

A major power failure hit several areas of Pune, India, in Western India on Monday at 4:45 p.m. The blackout happened as a result of a fault at the 400-kV Jejuri substation of the Maharashtra State Transmission Company Ltd (Transco).

S. Jadhav, deputy chief public relations officer of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL), said supply to Kharadi had been restored by 6:30 p.m., and the rest of the areas were expected to get power by late night, according to The Times of India.

Jadhav said following the fault, the Pune zone, comprising rural and urban areas, faced a power shortfall of 250 MW, forcing the MSEDCL to resort to emergency load-shedding in rural areas.

"We requested our extra high voltage consumers, like Bharat Forge, Telco, Kalyani Carpenter and Bajaj, to reduce their power intake to help tide over the situation and they cooperated," he told the Times of India.

Following the technical snag at Jejuri substation, the 500 MVA interconnecting transformer tripped, resulting in an islanding effect and the subsequent power shortfall. The smaller substations at Mundhwa, Theur and Kharadi tripped and were being restored.
