PG&E Purchases More Renewable Wind Energy to Serve California Customers

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. has entered into a long-term agreement with Klondike Wind Power III LLC, a subsidiary of Iberdrola Renewables, to purchase 90 MW of renewable wind energy from the Klondike wind facility in Sherman County, Oregon.

“Acquiring more clean wind power is a key part of PG&E’s commitment to providing our California customers with reliable, environmentally responsible energy,” said Fong Wan, vice president of energy procurement for PG&E.

The project will generate approximately 260 million kWh of renewable energy annually. This would be equivalent to the amount of energy needed to serve approximately 38,000 residential homes on an annual basis. Deliveries are expected to begin in December 2008. This is the second major wind project that PG&E has signed this year, bringing the utility’s total amount of renewable wind energy under contract or delivered to more than 1,250 MW.

Since 2002, PG&E has entered into contracts for more than 3,600 MW of renewable power and has contractual commitments for more than 24 percent of its future deliveries from renewable sources. On average, more than 50 percent of the energy PG&E delivers to its customers comes from generating sources that emit no carbon dioxide, making the company’s energy among the cleanest in the nation.
