Progress Energy Crews Restoring Service Across the Carolinas

Progress Energy crews have restored service to more than 180,000 customers who lost power in the winter storm that dumped up to 8 inches of snow across the Carolinas, and as of 5 p.m. yesterday, an army of more than 500 line and tree workers and support teams were taking aim on about 39,000 households and businesses still without electricity.

Crews from the mountains to the coast have been working to repair damage from the storm, which created outages beginning late Saturday and through the night as it moved from west to east, dumping wet snow on trees and power lines. At the peak around 11 a.m. yesterday, more than 80,000 customers were without power. Crews in parts of the state were restoring service even as other customers lost power, due to the rolling nature of the storm.

Progress Energy crews expected to restore service to more than 90 percent of customers by last night, with some repairs in the hardest-hit areas extending into today. Those hard-hit regions include Zebulon, Maxton, Elizabethtown, Henderson and Goldsboro.

In the Triangle, Progress Energy expected to restore service to 95 percent or more by midnight last night (other than the Zebulon area).

Most of the storm's direct effects have ceased, although winds could blow snow-laden trees and limbs into power lines, creating new outages. Driving conditions have been difficult through the storm, and as roads refreeze overnight, vehicle travel and restoration will be slowed.
