Software Allows Utilities Flexibility to Target and Optimize Localized Grid Stress

Oct. 24, 2013
Siemens Smart Grid has introduced Demand Response Management Software 2.5.

Siemens Smart Grid has introduces Demand Response Management Software (DRMS) 2.5, the latest advancement in its demand response solution. The new software offers a number of ways to create rule-based aggregations that can pinpoint localized grid stress within the utility’s territory while optimizing the dispatch of consumer loads. This offers utilities more streamlined operations and reduced maintenance costs while promoting customer retention. The technology further expands upon DRMS 2.0’s ability to isolate and target demand reductions via substation, feeder, zip code or geographical location.

The advanced “surgical” targeting within DRMS 2.5 allows utilities to more efficiently reduce power loads at critical sections in their distribution network. Unlike most other demand response solutions that exist in the marketplace today, DRMS 2.5 optimizes demand response program management by better understanding a utility’s specific dispatch request and develops a tailored recommendation of consumer loads and programs to precisely target next best actions. This new optimized approach to demand response allows utilities to fully manage and utilize the dispatch of consumer loads for both transmission and distribution level constraints, as well as enabling a utility to maintain fair play and ensure greater availability and reliability of loads from participating consumers.

“Demand response is an essential tool in the transition from a traditional hardware-centric power grid to a more intelligent, application aware - software focused infrastructure. Furthermore, automation of utility DR processes can help reduce program management costs by several million dollars per year,” states Aaron DeYonker, Vice President of Products for eMeter, A Siemens Business. “DRMS 2.5 enables utilities to extend the value of demand response from the transmission level into the distribution level, resulting in lower operational and maintenance costs and greater power reliability for utility customers.”

The software allows a utility to create and manage demand response programs for both emergency and economic dispatch, manage enrollment, as well as provide for full event management, notification, load forecasting, and analytics. DRMS 2.5 has been designed to allow different types of utilities and third party demand response providers to extract value from the application. The software now has the ability to help balance intermittent renewable energy resources, generate additional revenue streams, and also assist in meeting specific state and federal regulatory constraints.

DRMS 2.5 provides for advanced automated load control and ease of deployment and integration that enable a utility to automate IT/OT business processes. Siemens Smart Grid previously released its DRMS 2.0 solution in October 2012.
