Moving Toward Utility-Scale Deployment of Dynamic Pricing in Mass Markets

Prior studies have shown that dynamic pricing can provide numerous benefits to utilities and customers alike.

A Deployment Strategy for the Smart Grid: From the Generator to the Refrigerator

This white paper describes a coordinated, prioritized and customer-based development strategy for utilities considering the Smart Grid initiative.

A Guide to Transformer Winding Resistance Measurements

Matz Ohlen and Peter Werelius of Megger discuss the unique method of winding resistance measurements in transformers and how they are a fundamental importance to detecting potential mechanical and electrical problems that other methods are unable to detect the field.

Smart Metering for Water Utilities

Should water utilities replace current consumption meters with “smart metering” systems that provide more information to both utilities and customers? This question is being hotly debated in today’s electric utility industry but currently appears to be of less interest in the water industry.

Gene Kim's Practical Steps to Achieve and Maintain NERC Compliance

Anaheim Chooses eMeter to Provide and Implement Meter Data Management System

The Anaheim City Council in southern California has unanimously approved the Anaheim Public Utilities Department's decision to implement eMeter's EnergyIP Meter Data Management System. EnergyIP will process, analyze, and store data for Anaheim's 160,000 electric and water meters as it implements an advanced metering information system that will enable Anaheim to better balance energy supply and demand through rates and encourage conservation during critical peak periods.

Anaheim's award-winning "Spare the Power Days" pilot program -- supported by eMeter technology -- provided energy customers with the information and incentives to enable consumption reductions during critical peak periods. This program was named the Best Demand Response Initiative by the Energy Planning Network, a utility membership-based peer group.

EnergyIP will be deployed to fully integrate five data collection sources including two AMI systems, two C&I systems, and the manual meter reading system with four utility back-office systems consisting of CIS/billing, work management, outage management, and GIS. With emphasis on AMI business process automation, EnergyIP will provide daily interval data validation, estimation, and editing (VEE), flat rate, time of use (TOU) and critical peak billing determinants, automated exception processing, real-time outage and restoration event management, load data for distribution planning, and AMI asset tracking and life-cycle management. Additionally, the EnergyIP suite of analytic tools will empower Anaheim to optimize its operations.

The Anaheim Public Utilities department reported to the city council that the decision to select EnergyIP would result in the lowest total cost of ownership over the life of the investment through lower integration and operations efforts and cost. The report concluded that "eMeter's proposal provides a balanced combination of technology that is flexible and adaptable, meets current and projected future requirements, and can be most readily integrated with current and projected applications." The report also found that "the overall assessment was clearly corroborated by customer references. eMeter's reference accounts were consistently positive, particularly in the area of schedules and functionality being delivered, as promised, in a timely manner. Finally, eMeter offered a product -- EnergyIP -- that was able to integrate with a wider range of other systems including the Department's Outage Management System."
