Israel: Israel Electric Corp. Awards Siemens Distribution Management System Contract

Israel Electric Corp. (IEC) awarded the Energy Management & Information Systems Division of Siemens Power Transmission & Distribution Inc. (Raleigh, North Carolina, U.S.) a contract to provide the utility with a new Distribution Management System (DMS).

The new DMS will provide IEC with a more reliable energy supply and enhanced outage management capabilities. The system is based on Siemens SINAUT Spectrum software and incorporates the following applications: Switching Procedure Management, Outage Management, Cuts and Jumpers, Trace and Query, Fault Location, Fault Isolation/Service Restoration, Distribution Power Flow, Volt/Var Control, Optimal Feeder Reconfiguration and Load Estimation.

The turnkey project includes all related communication network and field equipment.

“Siemens and IEC have a long history of successful partnerships in the power industry,” said Greg Johnson, vice president of Siemens Energy Management & Information Systems. “Our two companies work very well together in an environment of mutual trust and respect. We are extremely pleased that we were selected to provide their new DMS because we know how critical this system is to meeting the future requirements for reliability, security and control of Israel's power system.”

This is the second Siemens control system for IEC. In 1995, IEC purchased a Siemens Energy Management System (EMS) to control its generation and high-voltage transmission network. The new system will be linked to the current legacy Siemens EMS and IEC corporate system, and the two systems will share the same databases. This will allow for complete oversight, management and control of IEC's entire national power grid.

The turnkey system, valued at US$48 million, has additional options valued at $29 million for future expandability and functionality. The DMS actually consists of five separate systems, being installed at five different sites.
