Oman: OMAN Awards AREVA T&D the Country's Largest High-Voltage GIS Contract Ever

AREVA's Transmission and Distribution (T&D) division has won an unprecedented contract in Oman for the supply of high-voltage gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). The US$18 million contract is with the Bahwan Engineering Co., subcontracted by Oman's Ministry of Housing, Electricity & Water (MHEW), to build and install three 220-kV substations.

Oman has undergone important economic and demographic growth, resulting in an increasing demand in energy, which the MEHW is responding to by boosting its energy production with the construction of a new power plant.

The three substations will integrate the new plant into the national power grid and will ensure that the electricity generated is safely and efficiently delivered across the country. They also will contribute to Oman's high-voltage grid expansion project, in preparation for its interconnection with neighboring Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

The first substation will be installed in the Sohar power plant, currently under construction in northern Oman. The second substation, which will act as a central node for all future interconnections between the country's regional grids, will be located just a few kilometers away. The third substation will be situated in the city of Maludha, 40 km (25 miles) away from Sohar.

Altogether, AREVA T&D will supply 32 bays of its B105 gas-insulated circuit breakers manufactured in its French factory in Aix-les-Bains.

The first two substations will be operational within 14 months and the third within 24 months.
