PureWave UPS Prescribed For a Medical Facility
A regional medical center in North Carolina selected an S&C PureWave UPS System from S&C Electric Co. (Chicago, Illinois, U.S.) to enhance power quality for the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine in its facility.
Periodic voltage sags had been causing major damage to the exciter element of the MRI machine. A US$250,000 repair charge applied each time the exciter element was damaged. An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) was determined to be the best solution for handling these voltage sags. The problem was the facility did not have room for a UPS.
S&C's PureWave UPS System provided the only viable solution because it can be installed outdoors. A 313-kVA/250-kW unit was delivered in January 2003, completely factory-assembled and tested. The system is expected to save more than $500,000 per year in repair costs, yielding an immediate return on investment.
S&C's PureWave UPS System is available in ratings up to 20 MVA and offers 30 seconds of protection at 100% load, thus handling practically all disturbances. The system's offline design increases battery life and reduces maintenance.
