Wisconsin Public Service Stays the Course with FAAR Software
Wisconsin Public Service Corp. (WPS; Green Bay, Wisconsin, U.S.) will replace its existing FAAR (Field Access to Automated Records) software with the new FAAR system from NMT Corp. (La Crosse, Wisconsin).
WPS is in the process of migrating NMT Corp.'s FAAR mobile and network viewing software to its GE Network Solutions Smallworld GIS platform. The new FAAR application distributes spatial and facility attribute data to both network and field users. Implementation of the new system, which began in September, is expected to take five months, reaching 400 field employees across 20+ locations as well as more than 800 network clients.
The new FAAR system replaces the existing FAAR software that was implemented in 1995 to distribute GIS data from the IBM GFIS. WPS uses the FAAR application to provide access to gas, electric and land maps as well as facility data essential to their operations processes. FAAR allows field employees to easily locate, zoom, pan, magnify and redline graphic data, as well as locate and query non-graphic attribute data using a seamless map approach.
The WPS FAAR system also integrates data from other sources like the corporate CIS, accounting and auxiliary GIS systems, including Microstation drawings of substations and related structures. The ability to incorporate multiple data types provides a single access point for staff employees connected to the corporate LAN as well as mobile field employees to retrieve and view facility information.
