More than half of Indian population were affected Tuesday after a massive power outage hit the country for the second day in a row.
The northern and eastern grids have failed this afternoon, causing power cuts in the entire eastern and northern regions, including the national capital Delhi, a Power Ministry official said.
"Both the eastern and northern grids have collapsed. We are trying our best to restore power," V.K. Agarwal, the general manager of the northern grid, told media.
The two grids serve more than half of India's 1.2 billion people.
Local TV channels reported that all trains originating from the national capital have come to a halt and there is complete chaos on the road as power cuts have shut off traffic signals.
Commuters are having a harrowing time even as Delhi Police has deployed over 4,000 cops to man road traffic, the reports said, adding that emergency services like the hospitals are also affected by the outage.
This blackout came a day after northern India experienced power cuts following failure of the northern grid. Indian Power Minister Sushil Kumar Schinde had ordered a probe into the crisis.
