S&C Offers Complete Arc Flash Program

Since NFPA 70E was introduced in the 1990s, the prevention of arc-flash injuries has been a topic of great interest to industrial power users. However, U.S. electrical utilities are exempt from 70E, and instead follow the requirements of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) standard. In the 2007 version of the NESC a new rule was implemented requiring utilities to complete a system-wide arc-flash assessment — and have an employee protection program in place — by Jan. 1, 2009. With this rule both industrial and utility companies must now embrace prevention and protection as goals in reducing arc flash related injuries.

This S&C special seminar supports these goals. Its content is applicable to both utilities and industrial sites, taught by those who have worked on the front lines of the electrical industry. It includes an examination of arc-flash . . . the regulations and standards . . . the theory and calculations . . . the various methods of mitigation . . . and appropriate personal protective equipment. It provides an outline for both utilities using the NESC and industrial customers using NFPA 70E that managers, engineers, and safety coordinators can use to develop a safety response and hazard-avoidance program.
