CenterPoint Energy Reports Transmission and Substation Capabilities Restored

As of 8 a.m., CenterPoint Energy reported that 96 percent of transmission circuits and 93 percent of substation capacity are back in service in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike.

  • Transmission line inspections are 99 percent complete. A final system survey will be conducted over the next two days. There were no steel transmission towers or steel or concrete poles down; only 50-60 wood transmission poles were destroyed, the majority of which are located on Galveston Island.
  • All but six substations are back in service; five of which are located on Galveston Island.
  • Service has been restored to all transmission voltage industrial customers, including the Houston Ship Channel and energy and petrochemical companies.
  • All transmission connections between CenterPoint Energy and the ERCOT network were restored on Monday.
  • After receiving governmental approval, CenterPoint Energy established an emergency transmission connection to Entergy, which restored two substations, in order to restore power to a water treatment facility normally served by Entergy. This facility is critical to the water supply for the City of Houston.
  • Power has been restored to Bush Intercontinental Airport, Hobby Airport and Ellington Air Field.
  • On Monday, transmission service to Galveston Island and the Stewart substation was re-energized.
