PSNH Crews New York-Bound in the Wake of Ike

Thirteen PSNH line crews set out Sept. 16 to New York State to assist in efforts to restore power after the remnants of Hurricane Ike swept through the region. The crews, supported by a mechanic crew, a safety administrator and three line supervisors, were to assist National Grid, which reported about 135,000 homes and businesses without electric service, mainly in the central portion of the state.

Although the majority of damage from Hurricane Ike was concentrated in the Galveston, Texas-region — where it touched down on Saturday, Sept. 13 and left 2.8 million without power — the storm continued northeast into Upstate New York and Canada. According to National Grid, the remnants of Hurricane Ike “buffeted the entire region with high winds and rain that brought down trees, poles and lines in hundreds of communities.”

The PSNH crews are part of a larger contingent from Northeast Utilities, PSNH’s parent corporation, including crews from Connecticut Light & Power and the Western Massachusetts Electric Company. They were expected to arrive Sept. 16 at their initial deployment location in North Syracuse, New York.
