Parting SHOT
In Fairmont, West Virginia, Utility Pole Technologies foreman Doug Young (left) and crew member John Smallwood (right) demonstrate the proper technique for driving in a 10-foot steel truss to reinforce a weakened distribution pole on an Allegheny Power right-of-way.
Young lowers the jack hammer device and controls the air pressure with the help of an insulated pike pole while Smallwood operates a one-ton hand winch to keep the jack hammer in position and add extra torque.
When finished, the truss will be driven 5.5 feet belowground, strapped to the pole and capped. This technique can add years to the service life of a wooden utility pole.
Utility Pole Technologies is a subsidiary of UtiliCon Solutions Ltd. (an Asplundh company) and has been providing pole inspection and maintenance services since 1958.
