Grand River Dam Authority Upgrades Energy Management Technology

Oklahoma power wholesaler Grand River Dam Authority (GRDA; Vinita, Oklahoma, U.S.) has upgraded its electric-metering system with an enterprise energy management system from Power Measurement (Saanichton, British Columbia, Canada).

With generation assets that include three hydroelectric plants plus a coal-fired thermal generation facility, GRDA delivers wholesale electricity to half a million customers across 24 Oklahoma counties. GRDA's new ION energy management system replaces an assortment of older metering equipment with a network of 250 intelligent energy meters and software.

“These new meters offer more detailed information, more communications options, increased reliability and more power-quality data,” said Bernie Cooper, GRDA metering superintendent.

GRDA's network of ION 8500, ION 8300 and ION 7330 meters communicate billing and operational information to the main user interface, a computer system running the ION Enterprise software. The software serves as a central hub where staff can monitor and control power quality, reliability and energy consumption across the entire facility. To accommodate future network upgrades, all the meters are equipped with an Ethernet communications capability for maximum flexibility, now and in the future.
