Italy: ENEL Customers Receive Advanced Digital Meters
ENEL has created the Contatore Elettronico project, a plan to replace old meters with more technologically advanced units that can be remotely monitored and reprogrammed, and can deliver additional digital services.
Meter manufacturer Ampy Automation (Peterborough, U.K.) has developed two different models for the commercial and domestic markets respectively. Production of the meters is already in progress, with the aim of having one million units rolling off the production line each month by the end of the year.
With ENEL aiming to have 90% of Italian households wired to its new digital metering system by 2004, the power giant would be uniquely placed to offer a complete home networking infrastructure.
