The Netherlands: Dutch Utility Awards Pirelli Contract for Underground HV Cable Systems
NUON, one of the largest Dutch utilities, has chosen Pirelli Cables and Systems N.V. to supply and install all of the 150-kV and the major part of all 50-kV underground high-voltage cable systems for the next 2.5 years.
The contract, valued at Euro 23 million (US$20.8 million) for Pirelli, is part of the large extension and upgrading plan of the NUON “Full Power” network. The major part of the more than 20 50-kV and 150-kV projects will be installed around Amsterdam and the eastern part of the Netherlands. NUON also awarded Pirelli the system engineering, installation and diagnostic testing of NUON's cable systems.
Pirelli will supply more than 370 km (230 miles) of extruded 50-kV and 150-kV XLPE cable, more than 400 prefabricated Click Fit-type cable joints and 150 terminations. In close cooperation with NUON, each project will be custom designed with state-of-the-art prefabricated jointing and termination techniques, multiple conductor cross sections and types, and a cross-bonding system. Each 150-kV cable circuit will have an integrated optical fiber for distributed temperature monitoring system and future ampacity load management.
