Designing Energy Services for Commercial and Industrial Customers

Over the past year, technology advances and high energy prices have stimulated interest in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). Discussions are wide-ranging. Some focus globally: Australian and Canadian “smart metering”, new European Union requirements, the results of time-of-use pilots that arose in the wake of California’s deregulation debacle.

Utility Markers

FAUX-CRETE Utility Marker Posts feature a simulated concrete/stone appearance for use in locations where utility marking is required and when visual aesthetic balance with the surrounding environment is important. They can be molded in any color to match adjacent architecture or nature. Color and UV-inhibitors are integral to the product, not painted on.

The linear low-density polyethylene construction material will not crack, chip, peel or spall, even under temperature or weather extremes, and exhibits high environmental stress-crack resistance. Unlike concrete, it is impact friendly and has excellent memory in case of vehicle or pedestrian impact.

Leak Repair System

The quick-plugging action of American Polywater's PowerPatch Leak Repair System creates a durable, permanent seal that can repair active oil leaks in transformers, lead-sheathed cables, potheads and other oil-filled electrical equipment in minutes.

The PowerPatch system's two-part putty stick blocks active oil leaks. Then the quick-curing, two-part paste overcoat, which has a 41-kV dielectric strength, forms a seal that is impervious to water, oil and weather. The PowerPatch system eliminates hazardous alternative methods of repair, including lead wiping and heat sources in a manhole. This system is faster than welding, the electrical equipment may stay in service, and it eliminates “bagging” or removal from the field. Kits contain all materials needed to fix leaks while in the field, and can be customized to fit end-user requirements.

Pipe Grounding Clamps

Harger Lightning & Grounding introduces a new series of universal pipe clamps, which include a mechanical connector to connect ground conductors #6 thru 250 MCM and have a pipe range of 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 cm). Clamps also can be connected to ground conductors via exothermic connections or standard compression lugs. These dual UL-listed clamps provide bidirectional grounding capabilities, making it an ideal connection for grounding large diameter pipes. Clamps are rated for direct burial.

Harger's CPC series of pipe grounding connectors have a nominal pipe size range of 0.5 to 6 inches (1 to 15 cm) and accept a conductor range from #6 up to 250 MCM. Features include a “quick connect” mounting application and a bidirectional conductor design.

Integrated Access Device

Encore Networks enters the utilities market with the EtherFRAD, optimized to support the SCADA.

Encore's entire EtherFRAD product line enables utilities to migrate important measurement and control functions to a faster, more reliable digital transmission format, such as public or private frame relay. The EtherFRAD sets the stage for moving these operations to the more-efficient and cost-saving solutions of IP and IP Virtual Private Networks (VPN).

Software Solutions

Siemens PTD's Energy Management and Information Systems (EMIS) division produced a breakthrough for the optimization of generation resources for large regional wholesale energy markets using Mixed Integer Programming (MIP)-based Security Constrained Unit Commitment (SCUC).

Siemens PowerCC SCUC is part of the Siemens PowerCC Energy Market Suite of applications and is designed to optimize generation resources in large day-ahead energy markets while operating a stable and secure power system. This approach resolves many major deficiencies inherent in the traditional Lagrange Relaxation-based SCUC solutions by providing improved quality and robustness of the solution, and formulating accurate modeling of transmission constraints. In addition, the Siemens PowerCC SCUC is designed to maximize parallelization of the solution process, providing for high scalability on symmetrical multiprocessor hardware platforms.

UPS Management Software

MGE UPS SYSTEMS has released an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) management software for the Macintosh version 10.2 “Jaguar” operating system.

The new software protects connected systems by verifying the UPS connections and, in the event of a prolonged power outage, initiating shutdown when the UPS battery level is low. Power protection with the ability to perform a proper shutdown sequence has become especially important now that the Mac OS is based on a Unix platform.

Mac OS X ships with a built-in power management driver that provides limited functionality, while MGE's new solution provides additional capabilities and user control.
