Designing Energy Services for Commercial and Industrial Customers

Over the past year, technology advances and high energy prices have stimulated interest in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). Discussions are wide-ranging. Some focus globally: Australian and Canadian “smart metering”, new European Union requirements, the results of time-of-use pilots that arose in the wake of California’s deregulation debacle.

Cable Ties

FCI-BURNDY's UNITAP Cable Tie is outfitted with two isolated mounting holes, which can hold up to ¼-inch standard hardware and allow for direct mounting to trough, gutter or any wire way. UNITAP has pre-insulated aluminum multiple-tap connectors for line splice, reducer and tap applications. They are dual-rated for copper and aluminum applications, with multiple configurations that accommodate a variety of applications. The line is covered in clear Plasitol, eliminating the need for taping during installation and allowing for easy inspection. All UNITAP products are pre-filled with an oxide inhibitor and are contaminant-free due to solid end caps.

UNIRAP cable ties are designed for both field and production line applications. Compact heads and pre-bent tips facilitate quick and space-efficient cable bundling. All ties are fabricated of one-piece nylon with no metal parts. The ties offer high tensile strength and are chemically resistive to solvents, alkalies, oils, grease and diluted acids.

15- and 25-kV 200-A Inserts

Hubbell Cable Accessories (Hubbell Power Systems Inc.) Loadbreak Feed-Thru Bushing Inserts are used on apparatus having 200-A bushing well interfaces, meeting the requirements of IEEE Standard 386. The insert provides capability to create an extra tap position in an existing apparatus installation and convert a radial-feed transformer into a loop-feed unit. This allows installation of elbow-style arresters, which provide overvoltage protection for underground systems.

Switchgear with 2000-A Main Bus

S&C announces an addition to the Vista UDS/System VI Switchgear family, the 2000-A continuous rated main bus. System VI Switchgear with 2000-A continuous rated main bus is available with a short-circuit rating of 25 kA symmetrical in voltage ratings through 38 kV. Up to five 600- or 900-A load-interrupter switch and/or fault interrupter ways can be furnished in the SF6-insulated welded-steel tank.

Four-layer copper bus, dual-air bushings, and a taller, wider tank are required to attain the 2000-A continuous rating. The dual-air bushings are connected to the bus, which is external to the tank. Depending on the options specified, dual-air bushings may be furnished on one or both sides of the tank.

Fiber-Optic Feedthrough for Leak-Free Connection

Luxtron Corp. announces the release of a tank wall penetration system that uses only welds and O-rings to provide a maintenance-free and easy-to-install feed-through system for fiber-optic probes.

This improved tank wall plate with welded feedthrough ports eliminates the chance of oil leakage around the tapered NPT or pipe threads used with conventional tank wall penetrators. As an integral part of the fiber-optic probe installation, the welded feed-through plate provides a maintenance-free interface for connecting the rugged Luxtron fiber-optic probes imbedded within the transformer winding to the external monitoring system.

Luxtron's Fluoroptic fiber-optic probes enable direct, real-time, accurate measurement of transformer winding temperature; thereby providing valuable input to calibrate thermal models and enable dynamic load control. Unlike conventional winding temperature indicators that “infer” the hot spot by measuring top or bottom oil temperature, the drift-free, calibration-free nature inherent in the Fluoroptic technology makes these systems suitable for use in transformers.

Low-Power Switcher for Rack Applications

Emerson Network Power announces the new LPQ173 switching power supply from Astec Power. With active power factor correction to minimize input harmonic distortion, the compact LPQ173 switcher accepts 85-264 Vac 120-370 Vdc input and is ideal for 1U (1.75-inch) rack installations or other low-profile applications. Providing up to 175 W of output power with 30 CFM forced air or 110 W with convection cooling, this switcher is suitable for a variety of applications, including telecommunications, networking, test and measurement equipment, single-board computers and gigabit Ethernet devices.

The compact LPQ173 can be set up for lengthwise or crosswise airflow, giving designers layout flexibility. It includes a built-in Class B EMI filter, remote sense and single-wire parallel on the two primary outputs that enable current sharing to balance loads. The device also features overload and overvoltage protection as well as thermal overload protection. LPQ173 models have an operating temperature range of zero to 50°C (122°F) without derating and can function up to 70°C (158°F) by derating each output 2.5% per °C.

With a quad output, the LPQ173 features adjustable voltages on three of the four outputs. It also provides two primary low-voltage, high-current outputs that are adjustable from 3.3 to 5.5 V. In addition, the unit features IEC EN61000-3-2 compliance, power fail and remote inhibit and low output ripple. The LPQ173 demonstrates a mean time between failures (MTBF) of more than 550,000 hours at full load at 25°C (77°F) ambient conditions while complying with worldwide safety and performance standards from UL, CSA, VDE, NEMKO, CB and CE.
