Red Electrica Implements TL-Pro Software to Cut Costs and Speed Design Time

Red Electrica has reached an agreement with Itron Inc. (Spokane, Washington, U.S.) by which Itron will provide the Spanish transmission grid manager with technology that will be used to design its transmission lines.

Red Electrica specializes in the transmission of electric power and is responsible for the operation of Spain's power system, as well as the management of the transmission grid. The effective operation of this market relies on the existence of a well-managed transmission grid and system management to coordinate generation and transmission.

“We are currently embarking on a major expansion of the Spanish trans-mission system, which makes it more important than ever to improve our efficiency and effectiveness,” said Angel Gallego, chief of the engineering and line construction department at Red Electrica. “TL-Pro Designer will help us generate accurate, cost-effective designs more quickly than ever before.”

The TL-Pro system will be linked to Red Electrica's other transmission line design and management tools, which will allow designers to use TL-Pro to more easily generate construction package outputs, including plan/profile drawings, estimates and construction specifications.

Red Electrica was the first company in the world to specialize exclusively in the transmission of electricity and the operation of electricity systems. Since its creation in 1985, it has been in charge of the Spanish transmission grid and operation of the electricity system. The basic installations of Red Electrica comprise the power control systems that direct and supervise the operation of the systems, which consist of nearly 17,000 miles (27,359 km) of very-high-voltage transmission lines and 1728 substation circuit bays, with more than 26,900 MVA of transformer capacity.
