United States: Consumers Favor Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles
A new Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) study indicates consumers think plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) offer the best of both worlds with the advantages of both electric and gasoline vehicles, such as savings on fuel and maintenance, use of an existing 120-V infrastructure, long range and popular features.
The study, which is available to the public, is a cooperative effort of utilities, automakers, regulatory agencies and others. It found that: 30% to 50% of surveyed consumers would choose a plug-in HEV or a no-plug HEV mid-size sedan, even if priced 25% higher than a US$19,000 conventionally-powered vehicle; and that 63% of respondents preferred plugging in a vehicle at home to going to the gas station, 86% of which have access to a 120-V outlet.
