Designing Energy Services for Commercial and Industrial Customers

Over the past year, technology advances and high energy prices have stimulated interest in Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). Discussions are wide-ranging. Some focus globally: Australian and Canadian “smart metering”, new European Union requirements, the results of time-of-use pilots that arose in the wake of California’s deregulation debacle.

Managed Ethernet Switch

Phoenix Contact's Lean Managed Switch (LMS) is a compact and economical managed Ethernet switch. The LMS provides key managed functions for users who want more capabilities than an unmanaged switch can provide, but find managed switches with full functionality are too expensive.

The LMS supports simple network management protocol, rapid spanning tree protocol, Internet group management protocol (IGMP) snooping and Web-based management capability. These features make it easy to add network configuration capability, remote monitoring and diagnostics, and integral IT-compatible network redundancy.

An “E” version is available for use in Ethernet/IP applications, where multicast traffic is a concern.

Static VAR Compensator

American Superconductor Corp. (AMSC) has introduced a Static VAR Compensator (SVC) product line. This line is based on proprietary controls technology combined with proprietary thyristor switch technology AMSC obtained through its acquisition of Power Quality Systems Inc. (PQS) in April 2007.

The thyristor switch technology enables AMSC to offer SVC systems that not only have a lower initial cost, but also lower energy and maintenance costs and a smaller footprint compared with conventional SVC offerings.

Test Plan Library

The Zensol Library includes generic and specific test plans for different types of breakers. The majority have been tested in the field. These test plans and test data are used in conjunction with the CBA Win software and the CBA-32P, a 16-contact circuit breaker analyzer designed to perform timing and motion analysis on all types of circuit breakers typically installed in electrical substations. The test library is constantly being updated, so it's a good idea to check back from time to time.

Voltage Regulator Control

The SEL-2431 voltage regulator control from Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Inc. (SEL) is compatible with all North American 32-step single-phase voltage regulators. SEL designed the control to fit into existing control enclosures, eliminating the costly expense of removing the voltage regulator from service to upgrade the control.

Intended for both substation and pole-mount voltage regulators, the SEL-2431 supports fiber-optic, EIA-232 and EIA-485 serial interfaces using DNP3 or SEL ASCII protocols, making it easy to incorporate into existing protection and automation systems.

Hydraulic Press

The Model 30A Hydraulic Press from ACA Conductor Accessories is a single-acting hydraulic tool for conductor accessory installations, designed for installing connectors with 30 tons of force at 10,000 psi. Provided the safety valve setting is between 9600 psi and 10,400 psi, any pump capable of this pressure may be used. The tool can be operated in any position. The 2-inch (51-mm) opening in the C-head permits the compressor to be hooked over the conductor or accessory.

Desktop Test Set

GE Multilin's RTT Desktop Test Set is a compact, portable tool that allows engineers, technicians, consultants and integrators to test and validate the protection, control logic and configuration of protection relays, meters and programmable logic controllers before commissioning units in the field.

Designed for bench testing devices typically found in substations and industrial facilities, the RTT Desktop Test Set performs single-phase secondary injection of ac current and voltage, provides control of digital inputs (both wet and dry), applies resistance to RTD inputs and monitors the status of contact outputs.

Digital Relay Series

Schneider Electric's Square D Sepam digital relay product line for electrical protection and monitoring comprises three relays. The Series 80 relay is for critical sources and loads; the Series 40 relay is for important sources and loads; and the Series 20 relay is for more basic source and load requirements. All of the Sepam models comply with ANSI standards and use ANSI symbols. Sepam relays are suited for the most commonly encountered applications in utility substations, and industrial and large commercial environments at low-, medium- and high-voltage levels.

The product family includes a graphical software package that programs all relays with context-sensitive help. The relays also are modular, with a base unit that's easy to install with plug-and-play DIN rail-mount options.

Hybrid Optoelectrical System

Applied Optical Systems (AOS) has developed a long-distance hybrid system that carries both electrical and multichannel fiber optics that accommodates both LAN and wireless LAN platforms. The F-Link version of the AOS line includes a family of products equipped with up to 34 fiber-optic channels and a fiber-optic backshell, plus a complete line of connectors.

The F-Link concept was developed from the ground up as a hybrid solution. The plug-and-play connectors and terminals are designed for use in harsh and rugged environments. Whereas most optoelectrical systems have connections that withstand only 20 lbs to 30 lbs (7.4 kgs to 11 kgs) of strain, this one has a strain resistance of 250 lbs to 400 lbs (93 kgs to 149 kgs).

Cable Fault Locator

High Voltage Inc.'s combination Model VT33 VLF Hipot & Cable Fault Locator offers complete cable care for underground shielded power cables up to 25 kV. The very-low-frequency ac cable testing and fault-finding/burner instrument is contained all in one package.

The VT33 provides a 0-kVac to 33-kVac peak at 0.1-Hz VLF ac hipot mode, meeting the newly adopted IEEE 400.2 standard for testing shielded power cables. It also contains a variable 0 kV to 13 kV at 760 joules capacitor-discharge output for locating faults as well as a VLF burner to quickly reduce arc overvoltages and fault impedances. A VLF burner is much quicker than conventional dc burners. This is because of its use of alternating positive and negative polarities combined with the cables' stored energy being discharged into the fault every half cycle, rapidly reducing the fault's arc overvoltage to a lower level. The VT33 is also TDR and radar-ready with a built-in arc-reflection filter.

Ethernet Switches

RuggedCom Inc.'s new RuggedWireless and RuggedVDSL Ethernet switches were designed specifically to address the needs of electric utility and other applications.

The RuggedWireless products include the RS910W, a wireless device server with two serial and/or two Ethernet ports; the RS920W, a wireless device server with Ethernet over a very high-speed DSL interface (VDSL); and the RS930W, a wireless Ethernet with an integrated 6-port switch and Ethernet over a VDSL interface. Combined with the currently available RS900W, a wireless Ethernet with integrated 8-port switch, the RuggedWireless family of products provides a complete line of LAN-based industrially hardened Ethernet switches with IEEE 802.11b/g and wireless data rates of up to 54 Mbps.

The RuggedVDSL products include the RS910L, one Ethernet over a VDSL interface with two serial and/or two Ethernet ports; the RS920L, one Ethernet over a VDSL interface with two serial ports; and the RS930L, two Ethernet over VDSL with an integrated 6-port Ethernet switch. Combined with the currently available RS900L, one Ethernet over VDSL with an integrated 8-port Ethernet switch, the RuggedVDSL family of products is a complete line of hardened Ethernet switches supporting Ethernet over VDSL. Ethernet over VDSL is the perfect solution for bringing Ethernet networking to applications where telephone-grade wiring (or other copper twisted-pair wiring) is already present, thus saving the considerable cost of installing a new fiber or copper Ethernet network.
