MEGGER SUBSTATION BEST PRACTICES SEMINAR - March 2nd 2014

Sunday, March 2, 2014 • Denver, CO

Past Event:

Megger’s Best Practices Seminars provide a forum for you to join our senior application engineers in sharing their knowledge and experience of the latest developments in the power industry. Often, you may find yourself too busy dealing with daily challenges in the field to keep abreast of advancements in testing technology as well as changes in industry standards. These free seminars are designed to quickly bring you up to speed on new techniques and practices so you can return to work more productive than before.

Join us in Denver on Sunday, March 2nd and earn up to 6 hours of NETA CTDs or CEUs for free. Co-located with the NETA PowerTest conference at the Denver Hyatt Regency, from 9:00 am until 2:30 pm, we will be focusing on substation testing technologies including battery, CT, power transformer and circuit breaker testing.  Lunch will be served and after the technical presentations you will have the opportunity to perform some hands-on testing with Megger equipment.

SPACE IS LIMITED. Please register early for guaranteed availability.  Visit megger.com/us/events to register. Questions can be directed to Casey Henry at 214-330-3514. For future updates on Megger activities, including Best Practices Seminars, follow us at linkedin.com/company/megger or email us at broadcast@megger.com.

PRESENTATIONS

Battery Impedance and Capacity Testing

To take the guesswork out of battery maintenance and increase system reliability, it is critical that technicians follow proper battery testing procedures. This session will cover the latest battery testing requirements from NERC/FERC regulations and will explain impedance and capacity testing in accordance with the IEEE standard.

Efficient Procedures for Current Transformer Testing

Current Transformers (CTs) are among the most important components of a power system and they are often the most expensive pieces of equipment to operate and maintain. This session will cover the reasons for testing CTs, recommended tests to be performed, best practices when performing tests on CTs, and a checklist of tasks to be completed before putting CTs back into service.

Advanced Power Transformer Diagnostics using Dielectric Frequency Response/Sweep Frequency Response Analysis (DFR/SFRA)

The frequency response technique is a major advancement in the field of transformer assessment. This session will give attendees a greater understanding of the applications and benefits of frequency response technologies. It will also cover the main differences between dielectric and electromechanical advanced diagnostics.

Medium and High Voltage Circuit Breaker Testing

Circuit breakers (CB) have to operate within a fraction of a second in the event of a fault to protect other costly equipment on the network from severe damage. This session describes the basic maintenance tests for MV/HV CBs, including timing and motion. Advanced diagnostic tools for CBs such as first trip and Dynamic Resistance Measurement (DRM) tests will also be covered.

Introduction to Teleprotection

Teleprotection equipment enables command signals to be sent rapidly through the system to selectively isolate faults. This session will cover the value of using communication in line protection and bus protection. Several implementation schemes such as permissive over-reaching transfer trip and directional comparison blocking will be covered in detail.

Substation Safety Practices

Linemen, substation technicians, and other utility maintenance personnel are exposed to some of the highest voltages and electrical hazard levels in the United States. This session will highlight some of the recent revisions in OSHA, NFPA and other applicable electrical safety regulation and cover topics such as lockout/tagout and arc flash hazard assessment.
