Winter Storms Bring Power Outages Across the Nation
Winter storms across the nation have damaged electricity poles and lines, and at least 400,000 are still without power, CNN.com has reported. The storms affected states from Texas to Maine, killing dozens of people, mainly on roads, and coating telephone and electricity lines with ice.
The nine-state death toll has reached 51 from the winter storms, according to CNN. The storm had largely blown out of New England by Tuesday, but forecasters expected more freezing rain to hit parts of Texas on Wednesday night, said Dennis Cook of the National Weather Service.
Missouri was one of the hardest-hit states when severe winter storms swept across the area on Friday, Jan. 12, causing moderate to heavy damage throughout the state. An area from Joplin to St. Louis along the I-44 corridor was the heaviest hit. A second round of freezing precipitation took place on Saturday, and a third round moved through the state on Sunday.
Officials report more than 174,000 customers statewide are without power as a result of the storm. Rural electric coops report 75,000 customers without power. Empire Electric reports 45,000 customers in southwest Missouri are without power. Springfield City Utilities reports 30,000 customers still without power.
According to the Associated Press, 145,000 customers in New York state and New Hampshire lost power on Monday, though service had been restored for roughly half of them by Tuesday morning.
