Sharyland Utilities to Break Ground on Texas-Mexico Tie
Sharyland Utilities (Mission, Texas, U.S.) will hold a ceremonial groundbreaking on May 8, 2006, on its US$40 million 150-MW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) tie project. The tie will be located along the Rio Grande border connecting a point near the cities of Mission, Texas, and Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico. The wires on the Texas side will be owned by Sharyland Utilities, and the wires on the Mexican side will owned by CFE, the national electric company of Mexico.
The technology of the DC Tie project will be open access, allowing any user or supplier, including CFE, to have use of this facility; will have two-way flow design, thus maximizing benefits for both electric grids; will enhance reliability by providing a back-up source of power for both electric grids; can be used for emergency support in the event of seasonal or daily supply-demand imbalances; will allow modulation of the power flow to stabilize and control frequency; will optimize the different peaks between Texas and Mexico, thereby meeting the peak energy needs of both grids at different times within the same day; and will spur the international wholesale electricity market between the United States and Mexico.
