PG&E Restores Power to East Bay Customers, Cause Under Investigation
Pacific Gas and Electric Company (San Francisco, California, U.S.) electric crews have completed necessary repairs and restored power to all customers affected by yesterday's East Bay power outage. The final customers were restored by 10 a.m. today.
Yesterday at approximately 3:55 p.m., about 21,000 PG&E electric customers in the Richmond, El Cerrito, Kensington, Albany and Berkeley area were affected by a power outage. Most customers were restored by midnight and about 100 customers remained without power at 8 a.m.
PG&E initially focused on power restoration and ensuring that the affected areas were safe. Once power was fully restored, the company began its in-depth investigation. The initial investigation shows a powerful electric surge moved through the electric distribution system causing significant damage. The power surge caused downed power lines and damaged equipment in several separate locations contributing to the widespread nature of the outages. All available resources were immediately deployed and PG&E crews worked through the night to make necessary repairs and quickly restore power to customers.
PG&E will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the initial power surge. Any findings from the investigation will be applied to our system to hopefully prevent similar events from occurring in the future.
