Power Outage Strikes Tokyo at Rush Hour
A power outage hit Tokyo on Monday at 7:40 a.m. as offices opened and people headed for work. Large areas of the city were affected with transportation and computer systems and even elevators shutting down.
A construction crane on a boat struck some power lines, causing the blackout. The power was restored three hours later with rail service returning to normal.
About 800,000 homes were affected. Reuters reported that there were 58 cases of stuck elevators with people inside, but there were no injuries.
It was a holiday in Japan, so the number of commuters during the morning rush hour was lower than usual.
The government has set up a task force to investigate the damage.
