Xcel Energy Seeking Bids to Increase Power Supplies In Southwest
Xcel Energy, Minneapolis, Minnesota, has issued a request for proposals for 250-500 MW of dispatchable intermediate power to be available in May 2008 or May 2009 for customers in the South Plains and Panhandle of Texas, eastern and southeastern New Mexico, the Oklahoma Panhandle and southwest Kansas.
"Our solicitation for these additional intermediate power supplies invites proposals from all potential suppliers outside our company, irrespective of ownership or size," said Gary L. Gibson, president and CEO of Xcel Energy's operating subsidiary Southwestern Public Service Company, which issued the RFP.
SPS owns and operates just more than 4350 MW of capacity.
Examples of dispatchable generation technologies that might be eligible include natural gas-fired combined cycle power plants, coal-fueled plants, firm power supplied by other utilities and customer-owned on-site cogeneration, Gibson said, adding, "Certain renewable resource technologies, such as generators fueled by biomass or municipal solid waste, also might qualify."
