Session 1 — Network Components (117 papers)
Delegates are invited to consider attending one of the six tutorials to be held on Monday, June 8. Each tutorial will be presented by experienced technical experts from Europe and the United States who will cover specific subjects that are likely to be areas of concern or currently under discussion in distribution utilities. Early registration is recommended as delegate numbers are limited for these tutorials:
- Managing an Ageing Infrastructure
- Assessment of Emission levels for Disturbing Loads
- Overvoltage Protection for Distribution Systems
- Cost-Effective Integration of High Levels of Wind Generation
- The Future for Virtual Power Plants - Challenges for Technical and Commercial Aggregation
- Active Distribution System Management for the integration of Distributed Resources.
Session 2 — Power Quality and EMC (118 papers)
The main sessions of the technical programme extend over a three-day period. These sessions are well managed by expert chairmen and rapporteurs to ensure author contributions on their papers are limited to sufficient time for delegate questions and answers. The following paragraphs list the main sessions and include a brief outline of the subject specifics to be presented and discussed.
Session 3 — Operation, Control and Protection (137 papers)
This session deals with all aspects related to the components used in electricity distribution networks. The optimisation of the manufacturing and maintenance of components can influence the lifespan of assets at a time when utilities are seeking to optimise performance and increase service life. All parties, manufacturers and utilities will have the opportunity to share their knowledge and objectives during this session.
Session 4 — Distributed Energy Resources and Efficient Utilisation of Electricity (113 papers)
Power quality in terms of system reliability, low voltage, frequency variations and waveform distortion will be the main features of this session. Safety issues associated with lightning, step, touch and induced voltages will be discussed, together with EMC and the latest work on electric and magnetic fields. The papers in this session will be presented by specialists, giving delegates the benefit of best practices and future trends on issues closely linked to customer supply standards and safety.
Session 5 — Power Distribution System Development (134 papers)
Session 3 will consider the operation, control and system protection used on distribution networks. To address customer expectations and fulfil regulatory standards, utilities are continually updating and upgrading existing control facilities. The session highlights utility needs, in addition to reviewing the latest technologies developed by the leading international manufacturers.
Session 6 — The Distribution Network in the Electricity Market Place and Impact of Regulation (91 papers)
Distributed generation, storage systems and load control schemes are having an increasing impact on the performance of distribution networks. Delegates opting to attend this session will have the opportunity to benefit from the range of contributions selected on ways to improve the utilisation of energy and efficiently manage distribution networks designed before the advent of distributed generation.
ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS
Session 5 will address all aspects related to short- and long-term development of high- and low-voltage networks to meet the changing and challenging demands placed on distribution networks will be considered. Optimum asset utilisation techniques and strategies, together with the demands presented by distributed energy resources, will give delegates the knowledge and confidence to face the rapidly changing demands on both urban and rural networks.
The role of electricity distribution companies is changing as it now provides a marketplace for consumers and small-scale power producers that can require intelligent demand-response actions based on market price, energy conservation and efficiency goals. These changes in the business environment demand improved asset management strategies, automatic meter management systems and improvements in operational efficiency. This session will give delegates the opportunity to share experience and benefit from the papers presented on current and future developments.
POSTER SESSIONS
The roundtable discussions have become a popular and well-attended feature of the CIRED technical programme. In total, some 16 discussion meetings linked to the main sessions will be held during these three days. These meetings give delegates unlimited access to the chairman of the main sessions, who, together with a panel of experts, will review and discuss selected subjects related to the sessions.
International Technical Exhibition
A further six discussion meetings arranged in the same format under the title of “Research and Innovation Forum” will give delegates the chance to learn and contribute to the current research programmes that have a direct link to the subjects addressed in the main sessions.
The poster sessions at CIRED give delegates an opportunity to meet the authors of papers selected for each session. The CIRED organising committee has adopted a refreshing approach to these sessions by implementing “guided interactive tours” of the posters displayed. In accordance with a pre-arranged schedule, the main session chairman hosts the tour to introduce and offer each contributing author the opportunity to present a short summary of their paper to the assembled delegates. This feature of the poster session has proved very successful as it provides an excellent forum for networking.
The conference will be supported by a major technical exhibition, which will be held for the duration of the four-day conference programme. The exhibition will be located on two floors and in the surrounding foyers in close proximity to the lecture theatres and meeting rooms. The exhibition has already attracted more than 50 leading manufacturers and service providers from around the world.
The CIRED 2009 exhibition will include displays showing a wide range of distribution equipment incorporating the latest technologies and the services now available for utilities. Delegates will have a hands-on opportunity to enjoy demonstrations of the latest software programs developed for design, protection, control and the management of distribution systems. Experts from manufacturers, contractors and research organisations will be present to ensure the delegates can take advantage of the opportunity to share knowledge and experience. The demand for a sustainable and an environmentally acceptable supply of electrical energy shows no sign of diminishing, so it is vitally important that industry professionals seize this opportunity to receive an update of the latest cost-effective technologies now on the market.
THE CIRED CONFERENCES
CIRED, one of the leading international conferences on electricity distribution, is held every two years in a different Europe venue. The 20
The beautiful city of Prague was selected in view of its strategic position to attract delegates from Europe, and the well-established intercontinental links should encourage delegates from around the world to visit Prague in June. All delegates and visitors are guaranteed a very warm reception from their fellow professionals keen to build on the unique forum for networking opportunities. The CIRED organising committee looks forward to welcoming you to CIRED 2009.
The first CIRED conference was held in Liege, Belgium, in May 1971, organised by the Association des Ingénieurs sortis de L'Institut d'Electricité Montefiore (AIM), as a result of the interest shown in its previous conference held in Liege in 1969. Similarly, in the U.K., the large interest shown in conferences on electricity distribution held in Edinburgh, Scotland, by the U.K.'s Electrical Research Association (ERA) in 1967 and by the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and ERA jointly in 1970 was sufficient to demonstrate the need for an international conference on this subject. In order to avoid a major overlap between the existing conferences, it was decided to hold the conference every two years, under the name of CIRED, organised alternately by AIM in Belgium and the IET (formerly IEE) in the U.K.
LIST OF EXHIBITORS (Current as of March 20, 2009)
Initially, conferences were held in Belgium and the U.K, but since 1999, the CIRED conferences have been held in various cities in Europe.
In June 2005, CIRED was officially set up as an international association. It takes the legal form of a de facto association under Belgian Law as CIRED is established in Belgium. Currently, CIRED has 14 national committees in Europe, plus one in the United States. There are a further 20 associate member countries from around the world.
