Florida Utility Expands Wood Pole Inspections

In an effort to enhance the reliability of its transmission and distribution facilities during extreme weather, Kissimmee Utility Authority (Florida) has expanded its wood pole inspection program.

The utility has contracted with Buffalo, New York-based Osmose Utilities Services, Inc. to assist with the inspection of wood distribution poles on an eight-year cycle and wood transmission poles on a two-year cycle.

The inspections will include a visual from the groundline, sound and bore, and strength analysis for every pole. Based on the outcome of the inspection, poles may be treated, reinforced, or replaced if needed.

KUA currently maintains 15,096 wood distribution poles and 340 wood transmission poles throughout its 85-square mile service area. All new transmission construction involves the use of concrete or steel poles for added stability.

The expanded inspection work began last week and continues for the next several months. During this time, customers may observe pole inspectors on or near their property. These individuals are working under the supervision of KUA and carry identification cards.

In 2006, the Florida Public Service Commission mandated regular pole inspections for investor-owned utilities and telephone companies, but made the inspections optional for municipal utilities and rural electric cooperatives. In an effort to ensure the highest level of reliability and customer confidence, KUA has voluntarily adopted the inspection standards.
