Offshore Wind Farm off Suffolk Coast to Power 415,000 Homes
Greater Gabbard Offshore Winds Ltd. (Surrey, England) was established as a joint-venture partnership between Airtricity and Fluor to develop what will become the largest offshore wind farm in the world, the 504-MW Greater Gabbard offshore wind farm.
In May 2008, Airtricity announced that it had purchased Fluor's stake in the project, and the company is now a 100% owned subsidiary of Airtricity, the renewables arm of Scottish and Southern Energy.
The Greater Gabbard offshore wind farm project involves the installation of 140 Siemens 3.6-MW wind turbines located around two sand banks known as Inner Gabbard and the Galloper in the North Sea, off the Suffolk Coast.
The project includes approximately 175 km (109 miles) of 132-kV XLPE cables, which will be used to connect the Inner Gabbard and Galloper offshore platforms, which are located approximately 26 km (16 miles) off the Suffolk Coast, to the onshore cables at Sizewell Substation. The cables will transmit 504 MW of power, generated from 140 wind turbine generators, each rated at 3.6 MW, and will be sufficient to power up to 415,000 homes. The cables will be manufactured at the Prysmian submarine cable factory based in Arco Felice, Italy, and will be supplied during 2009 and 2010.
In order to connect the power that is generated offshore to the electricity transmission system, a new onshore substation will be constructed at Sizewell, near Leiston in Suffolk. This will be connected to the offshore wind farm and will link to the existing overhead transmission lines in the area. Onshore construction activities began in early July 2008 at Sizewell. Construction offshore will commence mid-2009 with completion expected by the end of 2010.
The project is one of the major projects to be developed out of the government's second round of licensing and will go a significant way toward meeting the government's renewable energy targets.
