Sumitomo Electric Produces HTS Cables for National Grid's New York System
Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. (Osaka, Japan) has completed production of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cable that will be installed on National Grid's (formerly named Niagara Mohawk) distribution system in Albany, New York, U.S. The cable system consists of 350-m (1148-ft), 34.5-kV, 800-A three-phase-in-one type cable, terminations and joints. The cable was fabricated using bismuth-based superconducting wires and was manufactured by Sumitomo Electric using its proprietary production technique, the controlled-over pressure (CT-OP) sintering method. The cable system will be installed on National Grid's distribution system between two substations with a joint, or splice, 30 m (98 ft) from one end. A long-term grid test will begin in early 2006.
